The Grinnell Food Coalition (GFC), a program of the Claude W. and Dolly Ahrens Foundation, was established in 2020 to support neighbors facing food insecurity during the pandemic. Since then, GFC has evolved into a collaborative effort focused on developing community-driven food solutions in the Grinnell area. The coalition consists of a dedicated steering committee and community partners working together to address food insecurity and improve local food systems.
In February, GFC hosted its first community partner meeting, bringing together organizations and individuals passionate about food security. The meeting was well attended, with over 35 individuals representing 28 organizations. Participants discussed the newly developed GFC handbook, upcoming grant opportunities, and barriers faced by grant seekers. Grinnell College students and staff also took part, with students involved in Grinnell Farm to Table and the Grinnell Community Meal, while staff members serve on the GFC steering committee.
“It was incredible to see so many community members and food partners come together for this discussion,” says Jennifer Cogley, director of partner programs at the Claude W. and Dolly Ahrens Foundation. “The engagement and shared commitment to addressing food insecurity were truly inspiring, and I look forward to many more thoughtful and well-attended meetings in the future.”
