As colder weather approaches, Imagine Grinnell is once again helping local residents save energy and lower utility bills by expanding and restocking the Home Energy Toolkits available for check-out at Drake Community Library.
Originally launched in 2009, the Home Energy Toolkit program offers practical tools and easy-to-follow instructions that empower residents to make small improvements with big energy savings. The kits include updated materials and resources that make homes more efficient and comfortable throughout the winter months.
Each toolkit contains items such as window insulation film, spray foam to seal gaps and cracks, a caulk gun with caulking, LED lightbulbs, a digital thermometer, and a Kill-A-Watt meter to measure appliance energy use. Kits also include product descriptions, safety guidance, and step-by-step instructions — all available in print and online through the Imagine Grinnell website at imaginegrinnell.org.
“This program helps residents take practical steps toward lowering their energy costs,” says Roger Hill, Imagine Grinnell board member. “Even small improvements can make a noticeable difference in comfort and savings, and these toolkits make it simple for anyone to get started.”
The Home Energy Toolkits are free to borrow and available at Drake Community Library during regular hours:
· Monday–Thursday: 10 a.m.– 7 p.m.
· Friday and Saturday: 10 a.m.– 5 p.m.
· Sunday: 2 p.m. – 5 p.m.
The program is part of Imagine Grinnell’s ongoing effort to create a vibrant, sustainable, and healthy community. Other Imagine Grinnell initiatives include the Tree Corps, Grinnell Bike Share, Marvin Garden, and the Prairie Burn 100.
Imagine Grinnell is a program of the Claude W. and Dolly Ahrens Foundation, dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in Grinnell through projects that promote sustainability, recreation, and community wellness. Learn more at imaginegrinnell.org.
