Math is about more than numbers and equations. Through creative activities, teamwork and hands-on learning, Math Club for Girls is helping young students discover that math can be fun, engaging and part of everyday life.
Math Club for Girls is an initiative of S.H.E. Counts, a program fund of the Claude W. and Dolly Ahrens Foundation dedicated to supporting, helping and empowering women and girls in Poweshiek County.
The program meets every Wednesday after school at Grinnell Middle School until 4:45 p.m. and is open to girls in 4th and 5th grades. The first session began October 7 and continues through December 16. A second session will begin January 6 and run through March 10.
Led by Sarah Dahlby Albright, Math Club for Girls offers a unique approach to strengthening math skills. Rather than focusing on traditional worksheets and classroom lessons, participants explore mathematical concepts through creative projects, games, puzzles and interactive challenges. These activities encourage students to think critically, solve problems, collaborate with others and develop confidence in their abilities.
“Math is all around us, and one of the goals of Math Club is to help girls recognize how much fun it can be,” said Sarah Dahlby Albright, program leader. “By using nontraditional activities like games, creative projects and hands-on challenges, we give students opportunities to explore mathematical concepts in ways they might not experience in a typical classroom. We want the girls to build confidence, ask questions and discover that they are capable of doing challenging things.”
Registration is still open, and families are encouraged to sign up for the current program or the upcoming winter session. Students interested in participating should contact their teacher or the Grinnell Middle School administration office for registration information.
In addition to welcoming new participants, S.H.E. Counts is seeking volunteers to help support Math Club for Girls. Volunteers assist with activities, encourage students and help create a positive learning environment. Individuals do not need to be math experts to make a difference.
Those interested in volunteering can contact Jennifer Cogley at jennifer@ahrensfamilyfoundation.org.
Math Club for Girls reflects the broader mission of S.H.E. Counts to create opportunities that empower women and girls throughout Poweshiek County. By encouraging girls to develop their mathematical abilities and confidence at an early age, the program helps build a foundation for future learning and success.
